Brienne of Tarth- Game of Thrones
television series
A strong message about the difficulties women face in early modern and todays society.
We first see Brienne of Tarth covered in a knights armour from head to toe in her opening scene as she is preparing to fight an "actual knight". It is forbidden for women to fight or even become knights in this period of time so we as the audience know she has purposely covered her feminine features as well as her face as a disguise so she can compete and participate in the battle. This opening scene of Brienne is a very powerful message to the way women are viewed... women in that time were considered weak, useless, property, and even worthless and the men in that society made sure that their view on them was strongly enforced ( as why brienne was not aloud to participate ).
Brienne goes on to fight the other knight and win in hand to hand combat. The king tells brienne to step forward and remove her helmet, when her helmet is removed a crowd of men "Gasps!" as they realise she is a woman as if they are disgusted and mortified and the knight that she had beaten looks incredibly embarrassed. This goes on to prove that the men in that kind of society do not agree with women fighting as it challenges their masculinity. The message that is being shown here is that women are more to what meets the eye, they are heroic, strong, noble, dedicated, and their loyalty has no boundaries. Brienne shows everybody this by defeating every woman's most common enemy, the man. watch
